Imagine Racing Around an Island...don't think it can be done?
Race Around Rottnest Island is a great example that the Amazing Race series can be tailored to any location. Teams have a great time racing between different checkpoints in the idyllic setting of a paradise island...but only a short ferry ride from the mainland.
The experience begins with a full event brief, outlining the rules of the race, transport options, resources and travel vouchers, as well as giving the teams some tips to make the race a little easier. Once the race starts, each team has the option of catching public transport to during the race, use bikes, or they may choose to walk / run as they race around the island, or a combination of each.
One rule: they must always stay together as a team.
Teams navigate their way from the start to check points utilising their combined wits, acquired maps, clues and/or their ability to obtain accurate directions. After they complete the first checkpoint challenge, they move on to the next challenge. This process continues as they race across the island using a combination of transport options, trying to become the first team to cross the finish line.
At each checkpoint, the teams will need to complete a challenge or solve a creative problem.
Finding a needle in a haystack (well almost!)
Once teams have been given their first clue, they make their way to Rottnest Island Pier, where they must locate phone number taped somewhere on the pier. After texting their team colour to the phone number, they will receive a text back instructing them to locate a fisherman on the pier and, using the fishing gear provided, catch a fish before proceeding in the race. Following the fishing challenge, team must decipher a cryptic clue in order to locate an ‘American Tourist’ somewhere in the vicinity, and have their photo taken as a group singing the national anthem. They will then be given their next clue.
From here teams are instructed to locate the island bike shop, and / or the bus stop to secure their transport.
It’s’ egg’ citing…
Once underway, each team makes their way by foot to the Island Bike Hire Shop. Using the voucher in the race kit, teams can choose to either collect a bike each and follow the clue to the first challenge, or catch a bus to the first challenge. Team rivalry ensures the teams are all bustling to be first to arrive at the construct a challenge, on a beach just over one kilometer ride away. Teams must locate a race facilitator to receive instructions to their first race challenge. Within the race clue envelope, teams will find instructions, resources and an egg!
They must follow the instructions to construct a device that will safely transport the egg to the finish line, and they can only use one thing to construct it with… plastic drinking straws!
When the teams egg transport device has passed the race facilitators scrutinising, teams race off to their first physical challenge – hitting the green!
Hitting the green….
They must follow the directions and make their way to the island Golf Course, to test their skill and accuracy. Each team member must take a turn at hitting a golf ball onto a platform 100 m down the fairway. The team must continue hitting until they land one ball on the platform.
Following the teams’ successful golf swing, they will receive another envelope with directions to the races one and only Detour checkpoint.
The Detour….
Once the Detour checkpoint is located, teams retrieve an envelope that gives them the opportunity to select their next challenge from two options:
1. They may choose to take their team on a journey to Geordie Bay, as they attempt to locate their next clue hidden somewhere in the sand and seaweed on the beach between the rocky headlands.
Or
2. Locate and collect 200 pieces of Quokka poo and place them in a Quokka poo container in the middle of the beach
The Lighthouse… Teams must then locate the Wadjemup Lighthouse and then nominate two of their teammates enter the lighthouse, collect information from the commemorative plaque, , and be the first to the next challenge… the brain drain.
Brain Drain…
Teams must locate a race facilitator at Oliver Hill Lookout to receive a brain-busting puzzle to solve. Resting their tired muscles and catching their breath, teams will be screaming with frustration as they battle with the puzzle. Its is only when the team start to work together will they see that it is actually very easy to solve, and once solved, it reveals their final destination.
First over the line…
Teams will have to make their way to the finish line located a short distance away.
The final destination is situated somewhere in the main village area, and teams are required to make the mad race to the finish line in order to beat the other teams who will, by this time be close by and trying anything they can to sabotage the other teams dash to be first home.
The Amazing Race provides a sense of unity, fun and a shared achievement. It's amazing. This concept can be designed and conducted to suit everything from an explosive team based fun experience to one that mirrors work place issues and themes.
